| 内容記述 | It is often said that the poetry of George Herbert（1593-1633）is characterised by elements of surprise―sudden twists and turns in direction or attitudes, including the dramatic at the very end of a poem. My essay is an attempt to understand this Herbertian art of surprise within the context of Protestant theology, which re-emphasized the surprising ways of God to men against the rationalism of Aquinas. The main concern in this essay is to show, through an analysis of chosen poems, how the poet translates surprises in Chrisitan thought into linguistic ones. Behind the poetry of surprise is the theology of surprise, and it will be proved that Herbert gives it a poetic voice through his skillful handling of language. |
