My essay is an attempt to understand this Herbertian art of surprise within the context of Protestant theology, which re-emphasized the surprising ways of God to men against the rationalism of Aquinas.\n  The main concern in this essay is to show, through an analysis of chosen poems, how the poet translates surprises in Chrisitan thought into linguistic ones.
