| 内容記述 | One of the many vices of modern intellectuals is the unqualified trust in the power of reason, with the attendant reluctance, if not refusal, to accept what is even minimally beyond its scope. So blind is our belief in the capacities of reason--in spite of the obvious fact of its limitations--that we tend to reduce all phenomena to the level of what is graspable through its operation. Worse still, we may even choose to reject altogether some truth that transcends and baffles our understanding--in the name of empricism, scientism, or mere logical coherence. The present essay tries to examine how this absorption in ratio affects our response to Paradise Lost, especially to God the Father’s speech in Book Three [ll.93-134] and to Satan’s temptation speech in Book Nine [ll.684-732]. I will argue that the antipathy we feel toward God’s speech derives chiefly from our aversion to whatever is transcendental, while the same aversion weakens our suspicion toward Satan’s specious rhetoric. I will also suggest that the rugged aloofness of God’s language can in fact be taken as a sign of His omnipotence, while the surface smoothness and plausibleness of Satan’s language easily lies its way into the minds of overly rationalistic readers. |
