内容記述 | Language and culture are like the two sides of a coin. Therefore, it is essential that language instruction integrate cultural awareness. Understanding different cultures is one of the most important objectives of learning foreign languages. Each culture teaches the people within it how to see the world. Thus, for a language learner it is necessary to obtain a multicultural perspective. Cultural differences are often surprising, usually fascinating, and always worth studying. Even for students who are not motivated to learn a foreign language, studying different cultures is, in most cases, interesting and inspiring. Consequently, teaching about cultures can be a key factor in helping to influence students who previously showed little or no interest in foreign languages. In addition, learning about different cultures and tolerance, naturally leads to peace education, which is emphasized by UNESCO. Furthermore, bullying is a serious issue at schools around the world. Peace education taught through cultural diversity and tolerance can contribute to the nullification of bullying within a classroom. In this article, the theoretical background and practical methods of education for understanding different cultures in EFL classes are introduced with a view to creating an English class that is tolerant and where the students are motivated. As English has become a lingua franca, various cultures can be dealt with in English classes. |
