The subject, a Japanese boy, 8;0 at the time of return to Japan, acquired English as a second language during his seven years of residence in the United States. The subject’s spontaneous and elicited speech collected at regular intervals served as the basis of analyses.\n  First, the overall attrition process is provided followed by an overview of the total amount of L2 input the subject received after returning home. Secondly, the interaction patterns between the subject and the interlocutor are analyzed confirming the existence of conversational modifications known to be of significance in L2 acquisition research. Furthermore, the examination of the effect of input on vocabulary retention reveals that exposure to input aids in the retention of already acquired items, but has only a short-term effect on non-acquired items.
