In fact, examining IRC chat logs of young Japanese participants, we can find a wide array of linguistic “inventions” that have not been previously discussed in scholarly literature. Japanese IRC participants use not only the same devices as English-speaking counterparts to overcome the communicative shortcomings of IRC, but also employ various innovative tools to take account of social and cognitive factors so important in the Japanese discourse.
