An increasing number of students from different countries are studying overseas and Japan is no exception. Much research is carried out on foreign student experiences in Japan and the experiences of Japanese students travelling overseas, but a lack of attention is given to the impact that short-term study abroad programs to Japan have on the host institution students. How does the temporary presence of foreign students on campus affect members of the host society who have extended contact with them? How do host students make sense of the temporary intercultural contact they make? This paper presents a case study of the Sam Houston State University in Toyo Gakuen University short-term study abroad program, commonly known as SHSU in TOGAKU, with a focus on student perspectives of intercultural contact.
